Facebook Ads now UK’s top online advertising format

by Paul Haslam 24. November 2010 09:26

Facebook Ads has become the most popular online advertising platform in the United Kingdom, according to data published this week.
The study by marketing research organisation comScore shows that the social networking site’s sidebar displayed 68.7 billion advertisements to UK internet users in the third quarter of 2010. That represents a 31 per cent share of the total 221 billion adverts seen online in the UK this year.
Paul Haslam, director of The Web Bureau, said: “These new figures confirm what we have known for some time. Social networking sites are becoming increasingly important in the way that online business operates.Northern Irish businesses are realising that social media is here to stay as not only an important part of their online marketing strategy, but also a vital component of the way they market themselves in general.”
Other advertising platforms, including Microsoft (13.7 billion), eBay (8.8 billion), Google (8.2 billion) and Yahoo (7.7 billion), have been left trailing in Facebook’s wake as the social media giant capitalises on its huge audience.
Paul added: “The advertising figures are very impressive. What is perhaps more important for smaller businesses who are not using Facebook Ads is that this demonstrates the reach that can be achieved through social media sites and that market leaders are now taking advantage of this.”
The number of adverts viewed by internet users in the UK has increased by 34 per cent year-on-year. comScore attributes this growth to companies responding to the global economic downturn by increasing their online marketing.
Large brands have led the way, with the Virgin Group displaying 4.4 billion adverts for its broadband, mobile and TV services. O2’s owners Telefόnica, BskyB and BT each showed more than 2 billion online adverts.

Facebook announced yesterday their new messaging system.  This is not email, it is more like a conversation style platform where you get all your chats in one place whether they be via SMS, chat, email or Messages.  However you can get your very own personal @facebook.com email address.  If you have a Facebook account you can request one by following these steps:

Your email address will be the same as your public username, for example:

Profile: facebook.com/username
Email: username@facebook.com

To get a Facebook username visit http://www.facebook.com/username/.

How to find out who views your facebook profile ?

by Colin Graham 4. November 2010 10:44

The simple answer is that you can't...

There are quite a few applications that claim they can tell you who views your profile most / who's looking at your profile etc .. but they work based on you're friends' activity with your profile (who comments, likes, writes on your wall most.)

Some are very random and therefore inaccurate. Facebook protects people's privacy - it would not allow you to see who's viewed your profile.

This is the statement in which Facebook address this issue on its Help Center page:

Is there any way to see who has been viewing my profile? Can people see that I looked at theirs?

Facebook does not allow users to track profile views or see statistics on how often a particular piece of content has been viewed and by whom. Third party developers, however, may offer applications that provide some of this functionality. Please keep a few things in mind when using these, however:

  • Applications cannot track profile views for users who simply visit another person's profile. Facebook has made this technically impossible
  • In order to be tracked by an application, you must explicitly agree to allow the application to access your information.
  • Adding an application that provides this functionality is purely optional. If you do not want to participate, please do not add the application to your account.

On one hand this means that you can’t know who is looking at your profile, but on the other one, it also means that you can snoop without worrying about being discovered.

Facebook have said the stalker apps will not work and that we shouldn’t pay any attention to any apps that say they do work.

“Don’t believe any applications that claim they can show you who’s viewing your profile or photo, they can’t said Facebook before adding “we’re aggressively disabling those that claim they can”.
