This is something that many of us are turning our minds to now that another one of our “glorious” Northern Irish summers is coming to an end (although most of us would agree that it never really started to begin with!). For those who have children, it’s back to the daily challenge of getting then up, fed, dressed and off to school before your own working day begins, and for those who don’t, there’s still the earlier start due to increased traffic on the roads, not something we look forward to after a few months with an extra 10 minutes in bed!
Although the theme is an obvious one for this time of year, Mark explains the inspiration behind his wallpaper design:
“With summer drawing to a close and September looming I’m sure we can all remember the dread of the first day back at school. I remember this feeling all too well and decided to put a light hearted spin on this childhood memory.
I’ve wanted to do a comic book themed illustration for a while now so I’ve used a comic strip cell as the setting for the character (hand drawn - effort) along with a classic comic book typeface.
I chose a grey scale background to symbolise the feeling of dread before going back to school but tried to keep it funny with a light hearted strap-line and bright, friendly colours for ‘Timmy’.
Timmy’s reaction may seem a bit melodramatic but let’s be honest; it’s how we all felt!”
Mark has entered his design into ‘Smashing’ magazine’s monthly wallpaper design competition. We know Mark’s wallpaper deserves an A- but do you think he’s passed the test?
